Three men have been arrested from Assam for creating a fake WhatsApp account and instructing an accountant of a private company to transfer Rs 9.9 lakh to their accounts.

The trio were part of a group that allegedly created the WhatsApp account using the logo of the company and impersonated the director of the company to instruct the accountant to transfer the amount.

An officer of cyber police station said the matter was reported on December 3. On probing, the cops found that the money had been sent to multiple e-wallets and bank accounts. “The fraudsters sent a misleading message to the accountant pretending to be the director.”

Apparently thinking that the director had asked him to transfer the money, the accountant purportedly transferred Rs 9.9 lakh into one account that was traced in Barpeta in Assam. From the bank accounts, the cops found details of the persons.

Based on specific information, a team of Kolkata police raided a place called Howly at Barpeta in Assam and arrested them on Monday.
