Jobless patient found hanging at Calcutta Medical College and Hospital

Manoranjan Biswas had quit his job because of his ailment that restricted his movement, the police have learnt from his family

A patient who was admitted at the Calcutta Medical College and Hospital and had undergone surgery on his spine last month was found hanging from the ceiling in the central Kolkata hospital on Friday morning.

Police said Manoranjan Biswas, 48, a resident of Uttarpara in Hooghly district, was found hanging in a toilet on the third floor of the hospital’s Green Building around 7.25am. He was brought down and declared dead by doctors.

According to sources at Bowbazar police station, Biswas was admitted to the hospital on February 8 with an ailment in his lower waist.

“He underwent spine surgery and was recuperating. However, he had been extremely depressed as he was unemployed for the last year because of his ailment,” said an officer of the Bowbazar police station who was in touch with the hospital officials.

Biswas was a mason and had quit his job because of his ailment that restricted his movement, the police have learnt from his family.

An unnatural death case has been started.

“We have not received any complaint from the family. The body has been sent for post-mortem. Preliminary inquiry does not suggest any foul play,” said an officer.
