“We received a complaint about a suspected murder of a child from the Child Welfare Committee, Kolkata chapter, on March 18. Based on that, a team from the local police station was sent to the house. At that time, the child’s body was in possession of her father. However, based on the CWC’s complaint, we started an unnatural death case and conducted the post-mortem of the child,” said a senior officer at Lalbazar.

The police said they received the post-mortem report on Sunday which said the child had been smothered to death. Based on the post-mortem report, the police started a murder case.

“After the post-mortem report came on Sunday, the child’s mother lodged a murder complaint against her husband, who had by then gone missing,” said the officer.

A search is on for the child’s father.

Body found

The body of a man, whose identity could not be established till late on Monday, was found lying along the road near the Tagore Park crossing in Kasba in the morning. The body has been sent for post-mortem.
