A private hospital in Jodhpur Park was ransacked after the death of a 31-year-old patient amid allegations of negligence by the hospital on Thursday night.

Police said Ravi Kumar Lal, a resident of a neighbourhood off Jodhpur Park, was admitted to this hospital on Wednesday with an infection in one of his legs that was spreading fast.

Lal’s elder brother Rakesh alleged that the doctor under whom his brother was admitted had operated on him despite the fact that he had “high level of blood sugar.”

“My brother was a blood sugar patient. First, the doctor should have reduced his blood sugar level and then operated on him. The hospital did not even seek permission from the family before carrying out the operation,” Rakesh said on Friday afternoon.

Rakesh added that his brother was admitted on Wednesday and the operation was conducted on Thursday evening.

“On Thursday, morning the doctor asked us to arrange money for the operation. The operation took place in the evening and we were told that it was successful. At night, we received a call from the hospital asking for some medicines. When I went to deposit the medicines, I was told that my brother was dead.”

The family of the deceased and some of their neighbours rushed to the hospital on Thursday night after the news of the death reached them. The mob attacked the doctor and ransacked the hospital furniture.

The windscreen of a car parked inside the compound of the hospital was smashed and the doctor was dragged out of his room and beaten up.

Officers of Lake police station — under whose jurisdiction this hospital is located — went to the spot and rescued the doctor and dispersed the mob.

Later, the doctor, identified as Debasish Deb, told media persons that they had decided to operate on the patient only after reducing his blood sugar level.

“He was given insulin and the sugar level had come down. His infection was expediting. We had to operate on him immediately to remove the dead cells from his leg. The patient was stable after the operation. I spoke to him after the operation and left for home. Sometime later I was informed about his condition,” Deb said.
