The body of the 34-year-old Swedish national, who was found dead at a New Town guest house on Tuesday, was flown back to his country via Delhi on Friday.

The Bidhannagar Police Commissionerate had handed the body to Swedish embassy officials from Delhi on Thursday night after an autopsy.

According to a senior officer of the commissionerate, the preliminary post-mortem report suggested that Piortr Lukaszyk’s death was caused by a drug overdose — a combination of painkillers, antidepressants and sleeping pills — resulting in a cardiac arrest.

“The real reason for the death and the time of death can only be confirmed after the final post-mortem report reaches us,” the officer said.

“The cardiac arrest could have been triggered by drug overdose,” another officer said.

“The doctors told us that they had found a lot of pills in his stomach and very little food. The state of decomposition suggests he had died at least 36 hours before his body was found,” the officer said.

Lukaszyk had come to Kolkata on May 10 and checked into a star hotel along EM Bypass. He shifted to a guest house in New Town on May 13.

On May 16, Techno City police station in New Town got a call from the manager of the guest house, who said Lukaszyk was not responding despite repeated calls to the phone in his room and knocking on the door.

A police team then broke open the door and found Lukaszyk lying on the bed. He was taken to a nearby hospital, where he was declared dead.

On May 15, Kolkata police had received an email from his family, which said Lukaszyk was missing.

“His family members have told embassy officials that Lukaszyk had gone into depression over a relationship issue,” a senior officer of Kolkata police said on Friday.
