“Heatwave conditions are likely to prevail in several districts of south Bengal till April 30,” said an alert from the India Meteorological Department, Kolkata.

Wednesday’s maximum temperature was 37 degrees, like the day before, a couple of notches above normal. The minimum relative humidity, a measure of the moisture content of the air in the afternoon, was around 50 per cent.

Around 7.30pm, the temperature was around 31 degrees Celsius. The humidity level led to a RealFeel of 41 degrees.

Mogra in Hooghly, barely 60km from the heart of Kolkata, saw a maximum temperature of 42 degrees Celsius, a staggering seven notches above normal.

Bankura saw a maximum temperature of 42.7 degrees. Asansol and Purulia sizzled at 43.5 and 43.1 degrees, respectively.

A Met official said that while northwesterly winds were still dominant in south Bengal districts, Kolkata and its adjoining coastal areas saw the prevalence of southwesterly winds.

“The southwesterly winds are coming from the south Bay of Bengal via Andhra and Odisha. The moisture content in the air is not much. The winds are, however, driving the humidity quotient up," said a Met official.

According to the forecast, the mercury in Kolkata is likely to stay around 37 degrees till the end of this month.

“A trough of low pressure over Jharkhand is likely to make conditions favourable for thunderstorms from May 2,” the official said.
