Two women were allegedly molested and assaulted by a group of men in Kalindi after they protested against their lewd remarks and cat calls.

One of the women was waiting for an app cab on September 25 along with her friend when the group started teasing her and even threatened to rape her, an officer of the Bidhannagar commissionerate said. “Tui amader sathe chol. Toke rape korbo amra (You come with us. We will rape you),” one of the men allegedly said.

One of the women who spoke to this newspaper said: “My blood froze after I heard this. But I mustered courage and asked them why they would do this. They then started beating my friend and when I tried to stop them they groped me and someone hit me with a rod.”

The women lodged a complaint at Lake Town police station on Saturday. The police are yet to make an arrest.

According to the officer, when the woman started protesting the group surrounded her. “The woman was accompanied by a male friend who stays in Kalindi. The men started hitting him too. Hearing the commotion outside, two of her friends stepped out. The men did not spare them as well and beat up all four of them,” he said.

One of the women said she was chatting with her friend while waiting for the app cab to arrive when the group of men walked towards them, passing remarks. She and her friend protested. Then the assault allegedly started.

As they cried out for help their friends, who were upstairs in the apartment, rushed downstairs. “I begged them to let us go but they kept hitting us,” said the woman.

A senior officer of Bidhannagar commissionerate said they had received a complaint and were looking into the matter.
