Lakhani, 44, who went missing on Monday afternoon, was found dead on the terrace of Gupta’s house in Nimta, on the northern fringes of the city.

Gupta was Lakhani’s business associate and had allegedly taken Rs 50 lakh from him for a consignment of medicines that he failed to deliver.

A Calcutta police team went for the reconstruction and took assistance from Nimta police.

Gupta and Das were separately asked to narrate the sequence of events to ascertain whether they were suppressing facts.

“Gupta was made to show the room in his house where Lakhani was first seated on Monday and then narrate what followed,” said an officer.

Das, whom Gupta had called to his house before Lakhani’s arrival, was asked to leave and return later, the police said. On returning to Gupta’s house, Das had allegedly found Lakhani dead.

Together, they allegedly stuffed the body inside a gunny bag and placed it in a chamber under a water tank on the terrace of Gupta’s house. Two masons sealed the chamber.
