Don Bosco, Liluah
A social outreach programme was organised by Rev. Fr Manoj Jose, principal of Don Bosco School, Liluah, on January 25.
The school had invited 450 marginalised children from the local slums to spend a day with its students. Pupils from Classes VI to VIII interacted with the kids and ensured that they had a good time.
Eight buses were arranged to bring these children from the local slums to the school.
The young guests and all those who accompanied them were given a warm welcome by the school. A prayer service was conducted by Rector Rev. Fr Davis Veliyan, principal Rev. Fr Manoj Jose and Bursar Rev. Fr Ananda Raj.
The students were also served a grand breakfast and treated to a flower and a pet show. Several games and fun activities were arranged for them as well as gifts distributed among the children. The latter were finally shown a film in the school auditorium, followed by a delicious lunch.
The interaction between the students of Don Bosco School, Liluah, and the slum children made the day memorable.
“These programmes are very important. They teach our students crucial lessons of empathy and sharing,” said the principal.
Bihani Academy
Actor-activist Bobby Chakraborty conducted an awareness session on addiction and harmful popular trends for students of Classes VII to X of Bihani Academy in December.
The session was an interactive and thought-provoking one. The event began with the introduction and felicitation of the actor by principal Mousumi Mohapatra.
Chakraborty has been conducting such sessions globally for the past 10 years. The two-hour presentation focused on the importance of leading a healthy life. The actor used real-life anecdotes to showcase how addiction can ruin lives to make the students understand the importance of staying away from harmful popular trends.
The students were engrossed throughout the session and made to say aloud: “I am the king of my mind.”
“The session was an interactive one. It was an enriching and empowering experience for all the students,” said the principal.
St Xavier’s Institution, Panihati
Students of St Xavier’s Institution, Panihati, celebrated Republic Day on the school premises with great enthusiasm. The guests included dignitaries of the Suburban Educational Society, students of the school, teachers and staff members.
The celebration commenced with the unfurling of the national flag by Suburban Educational Society chairman Sushen Kumar Saha. This was followed by the national anthem and an inspiring speech by Saha.
The school captain , Jahnabi Acharya of Class XI, gave her speech.
A cultural programme, Medley, by the students of the junior school followed. The programme was a tribute to B.R. Ambedkar along with the martyrs of our nation. It included a mix of speeches, songs and dance recitals.

Vivekananda Mission School, Joka
tudents of Vivekananda Mission School, Joka, organised a grand programme to celebrate the 160th birth anniversary of Swami Vivekananda on January 12.
The students decorated their school with flowers on the occasion. A puja was performed at the school temple. Over 2,500 people, including alumni, students, parents and other guests, attended the event. It was also livestreamed on the school’s official Facebook page.
The puja began in the morning. A group of teachers helped in the preparation of the main bhog — pulao, bhaja, matar paneer, phulkopir roast, aamer chutney, payesh, mishti and doi.
The student volunteers actively helped out with arrangements. A yagna was performed and hymns were chanted.
Teachers and students also performed devotional songs and read out from the scriptures. The lunch was served to all after the puja.
“Every year we celebrate this special day with great devotion. This is the most important event in the school calendar. This year was all the more special as it was the 160th year. The planning went on for six months. What made the event memorable was the involvement of our senior school students. Class IX to XII took care of all the arrangements under the guidance of the teachers and left us spellbound,” said principal Sarmistha Banerjee.
“This day (January 12) is now celebrated as the National Youth Day country-wide. Our group of institutions are based on Vivekananda’s ethos and principles. So, January 12 is no less than Durga Puja for us,” said rector Arnab Chanda.
Calcutta Public School, Barasat
Students of Calcutta Public School, Barasat, took part in their annual sports meet with great enthusiasm on January 7.
The chief guest was archer and Olympian Dola Banerjee.
The event was inaugurated with a torch relay. This was followed by the oath-taking ceremony.
A welcome dance was performed by the students of Classes V to VII. There were theme races such as Let’s Go For Shopping, Let’s Be An Insect, Frog Race, Ball Balancing Race and Sack Race.
The students of Classes III to VII presented a colourful drill on the Fifa World CUP 2022. The ground dazzled with a Zumba performance to Shakira’s Waka Waka with students of Classes I and II waving their pompoms.
The events came to an end with the distribution of medals which were given away by the chief guest,
“Sports Day is certainly one of my favourite events in the school calendar. Witnessing the enthusiasm of the students as they compete for the coveted gold, silver and bronze medals is always a treat. The dance and drill performances were wonderfully vibrant and boosted the morale of the finalists. It was also lovely to see the proud parents cheering for their wards,” said principal Abhilasha Das.
