The body of a 21-year-old youth, who had been missing since he left his Haridevpur house on Wednesday night, was recovered from a spot near a police camp in Mograhat, on the southern fringes of the city, early on Friday.

Police said Ayan Mondal had last left his home on Dashami. The next day his parents lodged a missing diary after his mobile phone was found switched off.

Early on Friday, the partly decomposed body was spotted lying near Magurpukur in Mograhat. A message was sent to Kolkata police about an unidentified body. Later in the day, Ayan’sparents identified the body, the police said.

“It was difficult to make out whether there were external injuries,” an officer said. Deputy commissioner (south-west) Soumya Roy said the victim’s friend Priti Jana and her mother Ruma have been arrested in connection with the death of Ayan. Priti’s minor brother has been detained.

“Priti and Ruma have been charged with murder,” Roy said. Ayan’s relatives had lodged a complaint accusing Priti and her parents of being responsible for his death. They said Ayan had left home on Wednesday telling his mother that he was going to meet the friend.

“We have conducted a preliminary investigation and are trying to find out more details,” said an officer.

Trader found dead in ice factory close to home

A man who ran a business of supplying construction materials was found dead inside an ice factory near his home in Maniktala in north Kolkata early on Friday.

Family members said Amit Ram, 38, a resident of BB Ghosh Sarani, was murdered. Police, however, said the preliminary post-mortem opinion and circumstantial evidence suggest the death was caused by a fall from a height.

“We have not found any foul play. An investigation has been launched,” said deputy commissioner (eastern suburban division) Priyabrata Roy. Police sources said a person had seen Ram fall from the terrace of the three-storey building where he lived with his family.
