Four men who were working as bouncers at Scrapyard, a restaurant and bar on Camac Street, were arrested for allegedly beating up three customers who they said were teasing a woman, police said.
The police said the incident was reported around 2am at the outlet on 12 Camac Street.
“A 22-year-old man and his two friends, who are 22 and 21 years old, were physically assaulted by the bouncers,” said an officer of Shakespeare Sarani police station.
Shankar Chakraborty, manager of Scrapyard, told Metro over the phone on Monday that the “incident happened on the road outside the premises of the restaurant cum bar”.
“We came to know only in the morning today. It has happened after we closed down. The bouncers were hired just for a day. It has nothing to do with the Scrapyard,” Chakraborty said.
A senior police officer of the south division negated the version and said: “The incident started inside the restaurant when some of the guests allegedly teased a woman and the bouncers tried to stop them. But instead of calling the police, they took the law into their own hands.”
Chakraborty said they have “sacked” the four bouncers.
One of the three injured guests suffered cuts on his forehead and on the back of his head after he was hit with an iron bangle that one of the bouncers was wearing, the police said.
The injured guest was taken to a private hospital where he received eight stitches.
The other two were also injured on their heads and faces. One of them got five stitches, the police said.
A case of assault and grievous hurt with dangerous weapons has been registered with the police acting on a complaint by the three men.
A senior police officer said they will collect CCTV footage from the place to ascertain the exact sequence of the events.
“Even if the bouncers were trying to stop an untoward incident or trying to protect one of their guests, they should not have become overactive at any cost. Under no circumstances should they have used force or violence to get rid of someone inside the restaurant,” said the officer.
The officer added that till Monday evening, there was no complaint of teasing against the men who were allegedly beaten up by the bouncers.
