Justice Abhijit Gangopadhyay of the high court on Wednesday slapped a Rs 5-lakh fine on Manik Bhattacharya, former president of the state primary education board, for failing to provide a teaching job aspirant her answer script and details of the marks she scored in a written test in 2021.

The Teachers’ Eligibility Test (TET) was held in January 2021, following a notification issued in 2017.

Bhattacharya, a Trinamul MLA from Nadia who had been arrested by the Enforcement Directorate on October 11 in connection with alleged irregularities in recruitment of teachers for government-aided schools in Bengal, helmed the board when the test was held.

The judge asked Bhattacharya to pay the fine amount to the state legal aid authorities within 15 days.

Justice Gangopadhyay asked petitioner candidate Saheela Parveen to submit a fresh application to see her answer script and know her marks.

Parveen had failed to qualify in the TET. She applied to see her answer script and OMR sheet under the right to information act.

A few days later, she was informed by the board that since her application was not proper, she would not get to see her answer script and OMR sheet.
