Former chief minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee was discharged from Woodlands Hospital on Wednesday morning.
Bhattacharjee lay on a stretcher as he was brought out of the hospital. He returned home in an ambulance.
A team of doctors will monitor his condition at home, the hospital said in a statement. “Our nurses would be present 24X7 at his home and our doctors and physiotherapists would be visiting daily,” the statement said.
The home care team of the hospital will monitor Bhattacharjee for at least a month.
“He will have to undergo chest physiotherapy to increase the functioning of his lungs,” said a doctor.
Bhattacharjee, 79, has been suffering from chronic obstructive pulmonary disorder (COPD) for many years.
A doctor said the former chief minister has been bed-ridden for long. The team of caregivers at home would also work on increasing his overall body strength.
“They will slowly and gradually work on his body strength so that he is able to walk, maybe with support,” the doctor said.
Bhattacharjee will be fed through a Ryles tube because he is still not able to drink adequate volume of liquids that would meet his nutritional requirements, said a doctor.
Bhattacharjee was admitted to the hospital with a lower respiratory tract infection and type II respiratory failure on July 29.
This was the fourth time in the last four years that he had to be admitted to hospital.
