Focus on call centre fraud prevention

Raids on fraudulent call centres in Sector V and New Town have prompted government agencies and private industry bodies to take action

Only two of the 12 fraud call centres shut down by the Bidhannagar commissionerate in Sector V and New Town over the past month had proper rent agreements with their building owners, police said.

The back-to-back raids on fraudulent call centres in Sector V and New Town have prompted government agencies as well as private industry bodies like Nasscom to take note and try and formulate a plan that will end this menace.

On Wednesday, 24 people were arrested for allegedly running a fraud call centre in New Town. The employees used to pose as telecom industry representatives looking for places to set up telecom towers.

Nirupam Chaudhuri, regional director of Nasscom, said that they were running awareness programmes as well as sessions to warn both people from the industry as well as residents not to fall Into the traps laid by such call centres.

“We send alerts to the government agencies as well as the police as soon as we get information of any fraudulent call centre,” said Chaudhuri.

A senior official of the state IT&E department said a part of their security initiative is training police in cybercrime detection and investigation.

“We have trained more than 3000 officers on cyber crime. More than 2000 officers will be trained in 2023,” he said.
