Adult immunisation is important as a preventive measure against a host of diseases and to reduce their severity, a doctor said.

“There has to be more awareness about adult immunisation because it helps in disease prevention and reduces the severity of diseases. During Covid we have seen how the vaccination helped reduce the severity,” Saurabh Kole, cardiologist and medical coordinator, Belle Vue Clinic, and founder-president of the Indian Society for Adult Immunisation, said on Thursday.

“Immunisation is important for those with comorbidities like diabetes, hypertension and coronary artery disease,” he said.

He was speaking on the occasion of the World Immunisation Week 2023 observed by Belle Vue Clinic with stress on vaccination awareness.

“Immunisation is the key component of our primary healthcare and is one of the best investments in support of a healthier and safer world,” said Kole.

Awareness about adult immunisation is still low, said doctors across hospitals.

World Immunisation Week 2023 is being celebrated by the Indian Society of Audit Immunization with support from the Belle Vue Clinic.

About 300 nursing students of Priyamvada Birla Institute of Nursing were made aware of the Hepatitis B vaccination among healthcare workers.

“The theme of this year is ‘Big Catch Up’ and we feel that this awareness generation and vaccinating the missed cases and the hesitant cases is part of our social obligation,” said Pradip Tandon, CEO, Belle Vue Clinic.

Chandramouli Bhattacharya, an infectious disease expert based in Kolkata, said that awareness of immunisation has improved slightly over the years from what it was.

“There are certain routine vaccines that everybody should take, “ he said.
