A fire broke out in a five-story building in Chandni Chowk’s Mangoe Lane in central Kolkata on Sunday evening. Residents of the building had to be evacuated but no one was injured, police said.

The building is used for both commercial and residential purposes.

“The fire broke out around 8.45pm. Four fire tenders soon controlled the flames,” another police officer said.

“The fire broke out in the stairwell on the ground floor. It went up to the second floor via electrical wires. But the fire did not spread beyond the stairwell,” said the police officer.

A resident of the area said five families living in the building were evacuated by fire brigade personnel.

A woman who was evacuated said she was cooking when she heard about the fire.

Mangoe Lane remains filled with cars and slow-moving vehicles on working days. The lane was relatively empty since it was a Sunday, and that helped in the rescue operations.

The area is dotted with small stores, buildings with offices and also offices of large corporations.
