A 26-year-old woman was found dead in her room minutes after her fiancé left her home in Garfa on Sunday afternoon while her parents were in the next room, police said.

The man identified as Pankaj Das, who had been in a relationship with the woman for more than 10 years, has been arrested on charge of murder.

“Sushmita Das was found unconscious on the bed when her mother checked on her soon after Pankaj left their house on Sunday afternoon. The family took her to MR Bangur Hospital where she was declared dead,” said an officer of Garfa police station.

A resident of Habra in North 24-Parganas, Pankaj works in a hotel in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.

A senior police officer probing the case said Pankaj has purportedly confessed his crime and told the investigators that he apparently could not control his rage when certain relationship issues came up between them and strangled her.

The police said they were informed about the incident around 8pm. Later at night, the family lodged a specific complaint of murder against Pankaj who was arrested from Howrah station early on Monday morning.

On Sunday, Pankaj had lunch with the family and then complained of illness, the police said. “He went to Sushmita’s room to rest. When Sushmita went to her room, they apparently had an argument,” the officer added.

Pankaj left the house around 4.30pm. Soon after, Sushmita’s mother went to her room to find out what the couple had decided about their marriage when she found her daughter lying unconscious on the bed.

Pankaj was remanded in police custody when he was produced before a court on Monday.
