A man riding pillion on a motorcycle on Jinjirabazar flyover in west Kolkata was flung off the bike and landed on the road underneath — around 30ft below — after the two-wheeler rammed into the guard wall of the flyover on Thursday evening.

He died on the spot.

The victim has been identified as Animesh Singh. He was in his early 30s, a police officer said.

The biker, Pritam Roy, was heading towards Budge Budge from Taratala, the police said.

Roy fell on the flyover and received multiple injuries.

He was rushed to a hospital nearby, the police said.

Animesh was flung off the flyover to a spot near a post office nearly 30 feet below.

“None of them was wearing helmets. The accident happened because the bike was speeding,” said a senior police officer.

The 6.8km flyover starts at Jinjirabazar, about 3km west of Taratala crossing, and ends at Batanagar.

Six days ago, a 23-year-old man had died similarly after his motorbike hit the guard wall of the flyover and he toppled onto the road below, the police said.

Sudeep Mondal was heading towards Batanagar from Behala Parnasree at a high speed when he lost control of his motorcycle, hit the guard wall and fell on the road below near the Dakghar area, the police said.

On August 24, the driver of a truck had a close shave after the vehicle hit one of the flyover’s guard walls and toppled over.

The truck, which was headed towards Taratala from Achipur, fell on the Budge Budge Trunk Road below.

The incident happened early in the morning when there was not much traffic on the road.

Several residents said the condition of the Budge Budge Trunk Road below, which is dotted with potholes, often forces heavy vehicles transporting goods from the industries in the region to take the flyover, leading to accidents. The bridge should be left open only for small vehicles they demanded.

Fall off bridge

A man riding a scooter fell off a 40-feet high bridge after the two-wheeler was hit by a private car from behind, the police said.

The accident happened in Howrah’s Bally on Friday evening.

The woman, who was driving the four-wheeler, has been detained at Nishchinda police station for rash and negligent driving, a police officer said.

The car has been impounded, he said.

The scooterist, identified as Bapi Dutta, who is in his 40s, was coming from Dankuni when the accident happened, the police said.

Dutta was first taken to Uttarpara State General Hospital with multiple injuries and later shifted to a city hospital for better treatment.

Allegations have surfaced that the woman at the wheel had her headphones on while driving.

Police said they were yet to ascertain the exact sequence of events.
