Five men, including the director of a call centre in Sector V, were arrested by a CID team late on Friday. The call centre allegedly used to dupe American, British and Australian nationals by posing as executives of global software giants.

The call centre was operating from a rented space on the sixth floor of the Merlin Infinite Building in Sector V’s DN Block. The employees of the call centre would call their potential victims and pretend to resolve issues related to their computers.

One of the directors of the call centre, Shahrukh Mohammed, who hails from Maheshtala was picked up during the raid, the police said. The other four directors have been identified as Mohammed Ramesh, Vivek Singh, Pabitra Samai and Anand Shaw.

“The callers would tell victims that their computer had suffered a virus attack and would offer to resolve the issue. After the victim would agree the caller would send a link and ask him/her to click on it,” said the officer.

Once the link is clicked it activates a remote access software that lets the frauds gain access to the computers remotely. “The callers would then ask the victims to make an online payment to access the payment gateway and transfer money from the victim’s bank account,” the police officer said.
