Disorderly conduct leads to 212 arrests in Kolkata on Holi, 38 prosecuted in Salt Lake

Arrangements have been made to maintain law and order on Wednesday as pockets of the city will celebrate the festival of colours

More than 200 persons were arrested in the city till afternoon on Holi for “disorderly conduct”, police said.

There was no major law and order problem in the city till evening, officers said.

“There were a few complaints of forcible splashing of colours. Drinking in the public in a few places led to seizure of alcohol,” said a senior police officer.

“In all, 28 litres of liquor were seized and 212 persons arrested across nine police divisions in the city — central, north, south, south-suburban, southeast, southwest, port, east and east-suburban.”

Senior officers were asked to submit periodic reports of areas under their surveillance to the control room at the police headquarters in Lalbazar.

“There were two incidents of drowning. Around 4pm, Arnib Hazra, 29, drowned while taking a dip in a pond in Ranikuthi,” said an officer.

“Around 4.50pm, Susnato Pyne, 50, drowned while bathing in a pond in Maniktala.”

A squad from the disaster management team of Kolkata police rescued a woman from drowning at Ratan Babu Ghat in Baranagar on the city’s northern fringes.

The 23-year-old was taken to a hospital in Cossipore, from where she was discharged after treatment.

Thirty-eight persons were prosecuted for disorderly conduct and drink driving in the Bidhannagar commissionerate area, officers said.
