A delivery executive of a courier that partners a number of e-commerce platforms was arrested on Saturday night for allegedly duping one of the companies.
Aniket Shaw was arrested after a representative of an e-commerce platform lodged a complaint with the Airport police station.
"Shaw used to frequently place orders for apparel and accessories, including sunglasses. Once the packages were delivered, he would opt to return the orders and ask for a refund. However, at the time of returning the goods, Shaw would exchange them with used T-shirts, shirts and jeans," a senior officer at the Bidhannagar police commissionerate said.
Initially, the practice did not raise any red flag because of the number of deliveries made and the number of returns processed by the e-commerce giant every day.
"But when this kept happening again and again and at a specific location, the company took note," the officer said.
Since Shaw was a delivery executive, he would pick up the items he wanted to return and deliver them to the logistics hub from where they had been shipped.
"This ensured that nobody checked the returned parcel that contained the used clothes and other items," the officer said.
An officer who spoke to Shaw said he told him that he used to do this as he liked wearing new outfits and desired a flashy lifestyle that he couldn't afford.
