CPM leader, former state minister, Manab Mukherjee, passes away at 67

Mukherjee succumbed to a massive cardiac arrest on Tuesday morning

Former state minister, Manab Mukherjee, passed away after prolonged illness on November 29, 2022. He breathed his last at a private hospital at Mallickbazar on Tuesday and was 67. On Tuesday, he suffered a massive cardiac arrest and was rushed to the hospital where he died around 11.45am.

Final journey

According to CPM sources, Mukherjee’s body will be kept at Peace Haven after cornea extraction. He had pledged to donate his body. It will then be brought to the CPM’s regional party office at Beliaghata and finally to Alimuddin Street where party leaders and workers will pay their last respect. The former minister’s body will be donated to Calcutta Medical College thereafter.

Mukherjee was ailing for some time and had suffered two brain haemorrhages in the past. In August 2022, following a cerebral attack, he was admitted to the hospital where he was put on ventilation.

Political career

He was drawn to Marxism in the turbulent seventies. In 1996, he was in Late Jyoti Basu's cabinet with independent charge of the Department of Youth Welfare, Department of Tourism and Department of Environment. The Youth Computer Training Centre was the brainchild of Mukherjee.

In 2001, he was in Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee's cabinet as IT minister. In 2006, he was in Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee's cabinet as minister-in-charge, Department of Micro & small-scale enterprises & Textiles.
