Amrita Panda, one of the organisers, said the drive was held keeping in mind that getting children with special abilities inoculated at normal vaccine camps would be a challenge for their parents.

Panda, whose organisation DeepRanjani works for the welfare of children with special needs and abilities, said they had received several requests from parents as well as guardians of such children.

“There are hundreds of such children who are yet to receive the first dose. Several parents told us that they had tried getting their children inoculated.”

Subhayu Basak, who had taken his child to the camp, said that he and his wife had tried to get their child vaccinated both at a government-run vaccine centre as well as at a private facility but failed.

“My child is afraid of needles and at the normal centres puts up a resistance. However, here there were special educators who helped us get our child inoculated,” said Basak.

A resident of Rajarhat who had taken his son to the camp said that his son refuses to keep a mask on. “We got him here in a car and at the venue the organisers ensured that there was nobody except the vaccinators and special educators were around him,” said the father who did not wish to be named.

Apart from such children several underprivileged kids also received the shots at the camp.
