A couple in their late-30s were arrested after a team of officers from the Bengal Special Task Force (STF) raided their flats and recovered around 3.5kg brown sugar and Rs 5.5 lakh in Sukantanagar on the fringes of Salt Lake on Wednesday.
A team of STF officers raided two flats after they received information that a brown sugar manufacturing unit was being operated in Sukantanagar and it also was a distribution centre.
The couple — Mobin Khan and Mehbub Begum — were arrested after officers found 3.5kg of brown sugar stashed inside multiple containers.
“We conducted a spot test to ascertain the nature of the powder and after it was identified as brown sugar we arrested the couple,” said an officer.
“Mobin Khan and Mehbub are old hands at this trade and had been arrested several years back for possession and trading in narcotic substances. They not only used to manufacture the brown sugar but would also pack small quantities in foils and distribute it across the city and its fringes,” the officer added.
