Policemen who responded to a call reporting about the use of loudspeakers at a rooftop party in a residential area in Entally early on Sunday were allegedly attacked with wooden equipment, iron rods and buckets.
Two brothers, including the father of the child whose birthday was being celebrated, have been arrested. Police identified them as Prabhat Sarkar, whose child’s birthday was being celebrated, and Bapi Sarkar.
The incident happened on the terrace of a five-storeyed building named Radha Madhav Apartment on Ananda Palit Road.
“A police officer lodged a complaint against the two brothers and two women,” said an officer at Entally police station.
The police received a distress call at 100 about the use of loudspeakers at the terrace party early on Sunday. The message was forwarded to an officer on night patrol, who rushed to the building on Ananda Palit Road with a civic volunteer.
“The officer and the civic volunteer requested the men and women at the party to reduce the volume of music being played,” an officer in the eastern suburban division of the city police said.
“After some time, the officer called a sergeant at the police station and sought urgent help and reinforcement. He said he and the civic volunteer had been attacked and were detained at the spot.”
After this, a team six police officers and civic volunteers reached the spot and found their colleagues had been detained and were under attack.
“The team of eight was largely outnumbered by the men and women on the terrace. The cops were attacked with wooden equipment,iron rods, liquor bottles. Ice creams and cold water were thrown at them,” said a police officer.
“The men and women also verbally abused the cops.”
Entally police station has started a case under the Indian Penal Code sections on assault on government officials, criminal intimidation and common intention.
Multiple loudspeakers and music boxes, liquor bottles and broken furniture were found on the terrace on Sunday morning.
There is a complete ban on the use of loudspeakers in public areas between 10pm and 6am.
“Even during the period when loudspeakers can be used, there are restrictions on sound levels,” said a senior police officer at Lalbazar.
