Police checkposts will be put up around the twin townships today in a bid to ensure a safe Holi.

“We shall put up checkposts especially around major public attractions in Salt Lake and New Town, including both the City Centres, Nicco Park and Eco Park,” an officer of the Bidhannagar Commissionerate said.

According to a senior officer, apart from the regular force strength of the 12 police stations in their jurisdictions, extra forces are being requisitioned who will be stationed on the streets of Salt Lake, New Town, Lake Town, Bangur and Baguiati among other places.

Another officer said that around 2,000 police personnel will be out on the streets to prevent untoward incidents and drink driving.

A team of women police personnel on two-wheelers will be positioned around crowd-pulling areas to check instances of eve-teasing and molestation.

Surya Pratap Yadav, the deputy commissioner, headquarters, of the Bidhannagar Commissionerate, said teams would be deployed and checkposts would be set up “not only to prevent any untoward incident but to ensure a peaceful festival of colours”.

“We want to ensure that everyone, particularly women, feel safe when they step out of their homes. We will also check vehicles and mount surveillance to ensure that it sends out a message,” said Yadav.

Apart from regular police patrol teams, quick reaction teams and Heavy Radio Flying Squads will be on patrol duty. Plainclothes police personnel will also be deployed to blend with the crowds, Yadav added.
