The Celsius dipped to 11.8 degrees in Kolkata on Tuesday, a new low for the season.

In Dum Dum, the minimum was 10.9 degrees.

Met officials attributed the dip to the strong northwesterly winds.

The winds will start weakening from Wednesday again as the conditions turn overcast, said a Met official.

A system over Chhattisgarh and moisture incursion from the Bay of Bengal might cause some rain in south Bengal, including Kolkata, on Wednesday.

Tuesday was sunnier than the past few days have been.

From 19.8 degrees on Monday, the maximum temperature rose to 22.1 on Tuesday.

It was still cold but the afternoon was pleasant because of the mild winter sun.

The inaugural day of the Kolkata Literary Meet at the Victoria Memorial was crowded. As was the Kolkata Book Fair compound.

The Alipore zoo, Science City and Eco Park were packed, too.

But the conditions are likely to change. The Met office issued a bulletin on Tuesday predicting rain “over the districts of south Bengal during 23-24th January”.

An upper-air trough over Chhattisgarh and moisture incursion from the Bay will make the conditions overcast, said a Met official.

Rain is likely in Jhargram, South 24-Parganas, North 24-Parganas, East Midnapore, West Midnapore, Kolkata, Howrah, Hooghly, Bankura, East Burdwan, West Burdwan and Purulia, the Met bulletin said.

“In Kolkata, the minimum temperature is likely to rise a couple of notches on Wednesday. After that, it will dip again. Because of the cloudy and overcast conditions, the feeling of chill will persist,” said Das.
