The carcass of a crocodile was washed ashore from the Hooghly in Serampore on Tuesday morning.
The carcass, stuck in a thicket of water hyacinth on the banks of a crematorium in Kali Babu’s ghat, was first spotted by villagers.
A team from the forest department reached the spot around 9.30am and sent the carcass to Garchumuk mini zoo for a post mortem. Subrat Behera, a biologist with the Wildlife Trust of India, identified it as a mugger crocodile (Crocodylus palustris).
