The high court on Monday sought to know from police why they were “going slow” in the probe into the death of an IIT Kharagpur student, said lawyers connected with the case.
“Why are the police going slow? Are the police not aware of who they have to call and whose testimony they have to take?” Justice Rajasekhar Mantha asked.
The family of Faizan Ahmed, whose body was found in a hostel room on the campus on October 14, moved the high court in November saying they were “dissatisfied with the inept and tardy investigation by the local police authorities”.
The family had lodged an FIR with Kharagpur Town police station alleging that Faizan had been murdered.
At the high court on Monday, additional superintendent of police, Kharagpur, submitted that they were waiting for the IIT authorities to take disciplinary action against those who allegedly harassed Faizan Ahmed.
Justice Mantha then wanted to know why the police were awaiting a report from the IIT.
“IIT Kharagpur will give its report when they are through with it. Why will the police wait for that?” the judge asked.
“The court is not going to give lessons on how to conduct the probe. That is the job of the police. They should not leave any stone unturned and keep this in mind.”
The court ordered the police to file its final report on February 20.
Calls and text messages to the additional superintendent of police from this newspaper failed to elicit any response.
