“The physical examination of the body revealed that the woman had suffered burn injuries. But the cause of death would be ascertained only after a post-mortem,” said an officer of the south division.

The identity of the woman could not be established till late on Wednesday. The police said the woman appeared to be in her 40s.

“There were no fire marks on the spot where the body was found. But the body had burn injuries. This indicates that the body had been dumped on the spot. Rigor mortis had started to set in, which means her death had happened a few hours ago,” said an officer.

Investigators had not yet ascertained if it was a murder.

The police said they were examining CCTV cameras in the surrounding areas to check for suspicious movement of any car or individual from Tuesday night.

A few weeks ago, parts of a woman’s body were found in three bags in an abandoned central force barracks at Watgunge. Later, the woman was identified as a homemaker and her brother-in-law was arrested in connection with the murder.
