The body of a man was found on the footpath along Jatindra Mohan Avenue on Tuesday morning, police said.

According to officers, the man, who was unconscious, was taken to RG Kar Medical College and Hospital where he was declared dead.

“He appears to be in his 40s. There were injury marks on his head. The body has
been sent for post-mortem to ascertain the exact cause of his death,” said an officer
of Shyampukur police station.

People on the road spotted the man lying on the footpath around 6.30am on Monday.

The north Kolkata neighbourhood that remains busy with pedestrians and vehicles from the early morning is dotted with old standalone homes, small shops and under-construction buildings.

“We are examining people in the neighbourhood trying to find out if anyone saw how this man came here. CCTV cameras installed in the area are being scanned to check from which direction he had come,” said the officer.

The police said they have found the card of a catering service from the pocket of the deceased.

On contacting the catering service, the police said to have found that the man worked with the catering service but they could not identify his residential
address till late on Tuesday evening.

Four injured in accidents

Four people were injured in two accidents on Tuesday afternoon, police said.

A car hit the median divider in front of the Sukhobrishti Housing Complex in New Town’s Action Area III before turning over on its side in the afternoon.

The driver and the passenger of the car sustained cuts and bruises and were taken to a nearby government-run hospital where they were administered first-aid.

A man riding a motorbike allegedly hit a pedestrian on Sarat Bose Road around
noon.

Police said Mahananda Jha, 59, a resident of Elgin Road, was injured after being allegedly hit by motorcyclist Sayandip Das, 20.

Both are undergoing treatment at a private hospital in south Kolkata, the police said.
