Presidency University has announced it will admit undergraduate students based on plus-II board marks.
Along with the plus-II marks, several departments will take into account an applicant’s Class X board exams score as well while drawing the merit list.
An admission notice says an applicant’s Class X board will be factored in while drawing the merit list in subjects like chemistry, geography, geology, life sciences, mathematics, Bengali, English, history, performing arts, philosophy, political science and sociology.
Economics, physics, statistics and Hindi will screen students based on plus-II board marks only.
Presidency will publish the general merit list on August 13.
The university has opted for marks-based admission over the past two years since admission tests that have been a time-tested screening mechanism, could not be conducted because of the pandemic.
Although campuses like Jadavpur University and colleges under Ramakrishna Mission, have resumed admission tests this year following a dip in the number of Covid cases, Presidency failed to revive the system.
The formula for drawing the academic score in subjects where the performance in Class X board exams is going to be considered has been detailed in the admission notice issued on Saturday.
The process of online application will begin on Monday as has been mandated by the education department.
Arabinda Nayek, the nodal officer of the university’s admission process said, some departments were considering the marks of the Class X board examinations to create multiple layers of screening.
Asked why Presidency could not conduct the admission tests this year, he said: “The method of admission has been finalised by the university’s admission committee.”
Metro had reported on June 29 that the Presidency is going to admit undergraduate students on the basis of marks in board exams.
“When Jadavpur University, the three colleges under the Ramakrishna Mission, can resume the admission test, what stopped Presidency from conducting the admission test. I don’t think the authorities held any discussion with the departments before deciding on the marks-based admission,” said Gandhi Kumar Kar, a professor of chemistry and the former dean of science faculty at Presidency.
The Presidency Alumni Association in May had written to education minister Bratya Basu about the need to restore admission tests both at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
