His wife, who was riding pillion, was injured and has been admitted to hospital, police said.

Indrajit Dey, 27, a resident of Bansdroni, was heading towards Salt Lake when he lost control of the vehicle and rammed into a roadside railing around 2am. His head got entangled between railing rods.

“Such was the impact that his head got entangled between two rods and his body was flung off the bike, almost severing his head off the body,” said an officer of Pragati Maidan police station.

Dey and his wife, Subhra Dey, were taken to the Calcutta National Medical College and Hospital, where the husband was declared dead. Dey suffered multiple injuries.

The police said neither was wearing a helmet.

“A preliminary probe and going by the mangled remains of the two-wheeler, it seems the bike was moving at a very high speed,” an officer said.
