A family of three, including a 10-year old boy, died in a road accident on Sampriti flyover in Maheshtala, which connects Budge Budge with Taratala, on Friday.

Mohammad Firoze, 35, wife Nagma Khatoon, 28, and son Fardeen Khan, 10, residents of Ekbalpore, were on their way to a wedding reception in Budge Budge when the accident happened around 2pm.

Police said a tourist bus collided with two motorcycles on the flyover. The commuters on one of the two bikes died and the other injured.

Firoze and his family were taken to Vidyasagar State General Hospital where they were declared dead.

The other motorcyclist — Pankaj Kumar Mandal, a resident of Amtala in Bishnupur — has been admitted to the same hospital.

A preliminary investigation by the police suggested that the accident might have been caused by “competition” between the two bikers.

Officers of Maheshtala police station said the bus driver — identified as Ashoke Das — had been arrested and the bus impounded.

The police said they had also seized the two motorcycles for mechanical tests.

Several accidents were reported on the flyover in the past few days.

In September, a 23-year-old motorcyclist had allegedly lost control of his vehicle and hit a guard wall of Sampriti, catapulting across the barrier.

Sudip Mondal, who fell 40ft from the flyover to the road below, was killed in the impact.

Senior officers in Diamond Harbour police district said they were assessing the reason behind so many accidents happening so frequently.

Cab driver and biker injured

A taxi driver and a motorcyclist were injured after the two vehicles collided at the crossing of MG Road and Amherst Street around midnight on Thursday.

The motorcyclist, Suvajit Sinha, 22, of Baithakkhana Road, has been admitted to SSKM Hospital, police said.

The taxi driver, Mohammad Mustakin, was treated and discharged from the Calcutta Medical College and Hospital, the police said.
