Eighteen new cases of Covid-19 have been reported from the Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation area in the past week. The trend is in line with the rest of the state that is witnessing a slow but steady increase in the number of Covid cases.
According to a civic health department official, most of these cases have been reported from Duttabad and places off VIP Road, including Arjunpur and Baguiati, while in Salt Lake cases have come up from residential blocks like BD, FE and BF. In Rajarhat more than a dozen cases have been recorded in places like Narayanpur and Gopalpur.
The state health department has started colour-mapping zones from where Covid-19 cases are being reported to note the trends across the state. The three categories are pink, black and green, with areas with less than five Covid cases in a week being called black zones, those with one or zero cases green. Both Salt Lake and Rajarhat are pink zones, with 10 or more cases.
Banibrata Banerjee, the mayoral council member in charge of health, said they were keeping a close eye on developments. He said there were around 30 active cases of Covid-19 last week. Out of these, 12 had recovered he said. The number of positive cases on Wednesday stood at 18.
“The fact that there are less than 20 cases in a corporation where the population is over seven lakh is proof that coronavirus is not spreading at a rate that it used to before. We are in touch with the patients and most of them are requiring neither oxygen support nor hospitalisation. Hence the situation is not alarming but we are monitoring the developments closely,” said Banerjee.
Public health experts are still cautious as well.
