Subodh Kumar Singh, one of the five accused in the murder of Bhowanipore businessman Ashok Shah and wife Rashmita, declined to record his confessional statement before a magistrate on Thursday.

Singh, 45, had purportedly agreed to record his confessional statement under Section 164 of the CrPC and accordingly, the police submitted a prayer in the Alipore court. But the accused declined to participate in the procedure.

Singh, originally from Bihar, stayed at 19 Rabindra Sarani in Liluah. He was arrested on June 9 and is in judicial remand till July 5.

Ashok and Rashmita were found murdered in their Harish Mukherjee Road apartment on June 6.

“We have adequate evidence that would lead to the conviction of the accused. Even if an accused declines to give a confessional statement, that would not hamper our investigation,” an officer said.
