The school education department is working on a plan to send funds to government and aided schools within a week so age-appropriate uniforms for junior students can be prepared at the earliest, said an official of the department.

Many primary students turned up at school wearing dresses of their choice for the second consecutive day on Thursday as they have outgrown their old uniforms in the two years since the campuses shut down because of Covid and their parents are yet to get new ones made.

The state government on Monday allowed reopening of schools for students from the pre-primary level till Class VII from Wednesday.

The Telegraph reported on Thursday that the parents of many students had to get the seam of their children’s trousers untied so they would wear them to school.

An official of the department said that if their plan to deliver ready-made uniforms to government and aided schools did not materialise, funds would be transferred to the institutions soon so they could start preparing the uniforms through franchise groups.

“The funds will be for the students from Class I to VIII,” the official said.

Before the outbreak of Covid-19, the department would transfer funds for uniforms to schools.

“The government has taken up a project to deliver ready-made uniforms prepared by the micro, small and medium enterprises department. Since this project will take time to be ready, we may have to send funds for uniforms to the schools this year,” the official said.

The project to deliver ready-made uniforms has been taken up to ensure students get their dresses in time.
