Sanjay Das, who has been arrested for allegedly killing his first cousin Sushmita Mondal and nephew Tamojit in Behala for robbing money and valuables, had deposited the stolen jewellery at a gold-loan finance company at Batanagar, police said on Friday.

Das, who worked in a CCTV company, had taken a loan for organising his elder son’s ring ceremony earlier this year, and was allegedly in debt. He needed money to repay the loan.

Sushmita and Tamojit ,13, were found dead with their throats slit at their Parnasree home in west Kolkata’s Behala on the night of September 5. Seven days later, cops zeroed in on Sushmita’s first cousins Sanjay and Sandip Das.

Based on Sanjay’s statement, the cops went to the Batanagar branch of a gold-loan finance firm and found that he had taken Rs 46,500 on September 7 (two days after the murder) by depositing the gold ornaments he allegedly stole from his cousin’s home.

“He had deposited one broken gold chain, one bangle and two pairs of earrings,” said an officer.

The cops said a part of the stolen booty was yet to be recovered.

Sushmita’s mobile phone, on which Tamojit was doing his online classes when he was killed, was also stolen. It was recovered by the police on Thursday from a location close to the house.
