A cyclonic circulation has formed over the Bay of Bengal but it is unlikely to have much of an impact in Kolkata, a Met official said on Saturday.
“The system is over the east-central Bay of Bengal. It is likely to intensify into a low-pressure area by Tuesday. But it is unlikely to come near the Bengal coast,” said G.K.Das, director, India Meteorological Department, Kolkata.
“The system is expected to bring clouds and light to moderate rain to Kolkata and adjoining areas. But as of now, heavy rain seems unlikely,” he said.
The city has been under the grip of overcast conditions in the run-up to the Puja. Friday saw a sharp spell of rain in the afternoon and Saturday was cloudy, too.
Successive systems over the Bay of Bengal had triggered the change in weather after a prolonged hot and humid spell.
But Sunday was bright and sunny in most parts. “The monsoon trough is also passing over south Bengal through Digha, in Purba Medinipur. As a result, there is significant moisture in the atmosphere. Sufficient heating can lead to the formation of thunderclouds and rain,” said Das.
The maximum temperature on Sunday was around 33 degrees Celsius. It is likely to be in the same region on Monday. From Tuesday, a slight dip in the Celsius is likely because of the cloud cover. The clouds will keep the Celsius under check even if they don’t bring much rain, said Das.
