A crooner in a bar on EM Bypass in east Kolkata was found dead on the footpath on Muraripukur Road in north part of the city's Maniktala area on Wednesday morning.

Police said Bablu Sardar, 33, was a resident of Dhopar Math — not far from the place where his body was found. He had left his workplace around 2am.

“His body was spotted on the pavement around 5am. We are trying to ascertain what time he had reached that place,” said an officer of Maniktala police station.

An officer said there were no injury marks on the body.

Sardar was taken to RG Kar Medical College and Hospital where he was formally declared dead. The body was sent for post-mortem but the report was awaited till Wednesday evening, he added.

Sardar is survived by his wife Saraswati and two children. Deputy commissioner (eastern suburban division) Priyabrata Roy said the police did not receive any complaint from the family till late on Wednesday evening.

Sources in Maniktala police station said the cops were collecting CCTV footage from the cameras inside the bar where Sardar worked and from the location where his body was found.

“We are checking if the deceased had any altercation with anyone at his workplace,” said an officer in Maniktala police station.

A senior officer said it appeared that no one in the family was aware that Sardar was lying on the pavement close to their house till neighbours spotted him and raised an alarm.

His wife Saraswati purportedly told the police that her husband left for his workplace every evening and returned early the next morning.
