“We applaud doctors, cricketers or other professionals but teachers are left behind. Without a teacher there will be no doctor, no lawyer and we want to emphasize the importance of teaching as a profession and raise their esteem,” said Suborno Bose, chief mentor, IIHM.

In all, 120 teachers were awarded at the programme held at Hyatt Regency. Awards were also given to 100 principals and 120 schools and special awardees.

Sanjukta Bose, director, IIHM, said it was an opportunity to express gratitude to teachers.

“Even during Covid, when everything was standstill, you made sure that education continued,” she said.

The Telegraph Education Foundation received the award for Outstanding Contribution to Education in India.

The Telegraph Education Foundation is a charitable trust that provide financial assistance to students and schools that need a helping hand, the organisers said while Barry O’ Brien, trustee, The Telegraph Education Foundation, walked up to the stage.

“It is incredible how The Telegraph Education Foundation for 27 consecutive years has sustained a movement,” Bose later told The Telegraph.
