The Met office had said the weather would improve from Wednesday but another wet spell is likely.

The latest forecast from the Met office: a brief respite before another wet spell.

The system behind the last downpour that drowned the city has moved far away from Kolkata. But a fresh system has taken shape and is tipped to head towards the eastern coast sooner than usual.

“A cyclonic circulation lies over the Myanmar coast and the adjoining Gulf of Martaban. It is likely to move northwestwards and emerge in the northeast and adjoining east-central Bay of Bengal,” the Met office said on Wednesday.

“Under its influence, a low-pressure area is likely to form and then move towards the Odisha coast in the next 48 hours,” said an official.

A Met official said the system would reach the northwest Bay by the evening of Friday, at least 12 hours before the expected arrival.

The system has prompted the IMD to issue an ‘enhanced rainfall alert’ for south Bengal on September 26 and 27.

“A system headed towards the Bengal coast on the north Bay would have had much more impact on Kolkata,” said an official.

The current system is tipped to move towards Odisha and adjoining districts of Purba and Paschim Medinipur are likely to get more rain than Kolkata.

“But even then, a spell of heavy rain is not ruled out in Kolkata and adjoining areas,” he said.
