Another held in illegal telecom racket case

On Tuesday night, the cops had arrested the first accused from Kasba

The special task force (STF) of Kolkata police arrested one more person in connection with its probe into an illegal telecom installation racket operating Kasba in south Kolkata, a police officer said on Friday.

Acting on tip-off, the STF arrested held the second man, a resident of Moiradanga Road under the jurisdiction of Baranagar police station, on Thursday night, she said.

“He was the partner of the arrested man and used to run some SIM-boxes himself. The arrest of the first man alerted his partner after which he destroyed the SIM boxes as per his statement...,” the police officer said.

The man was booked under relevant sections of the IPC and the Indian Telegraph Act, 1885, and the Indian Wireless Telegraphy Act, 1933, the IPS officer said.

Acting on a complaint by the department of telecom (DoT), a 35-year-old man was arrested from Swinhoe Lane in Kasba police station area on Tuesday night.

The illegal telecom installation was terminating the ISD/VOIP calls and bypassing the legal international gateways of domestic operators.

During the raid, three actively running SIM-boxes with a total of 512 slots and containing 73 active SIMs, one CPU, three routers, one media converter, two mobile phones sets and a pen drive were seized.

Based on the DoT complaint, a case was also registered at Kasba police station under relevant sections of the IPC as well as the Indian Telegraph Act, 1885, and Indian Wireless Telegraphy Act, 1933, the officer said.
