Accused drove the bus till he was sacked

The man who allegedly stole the bus and rammed it into the Rathis’ car at a red light used to drive the bus till his service was terminated a year ago because of “misconduct and bad behaviour”, police said.

The bus owner, Sujit Ghosh, told Metro the driver, Faijulla Gazi, was caught stealing fuel a few times. That was another reason for his sacking, he said.

Two cases have been initiated against Gazi. Lake Town police station has started a case under IPC sections related to culpable homicide not amounting to murder, rash and negligent driving and mischief. Officers of Baguiati police station have started a theft case.

Gazi was produced in court on Monday and remanded in jail custody. The bus, on route 44, is 13 years old and has 68 traffic cases pending against it. Of those, 46 are pending in court.

Bidhannagar police commissioner Gaurav Sharma said the driver was trapped inside the bus and arrested at the spot. He was injured.

Sharma said the Bidhannagar police would identify more areas to set up check-points..
