The urban development department has banned movement of heavy goods vehicles, including trucks, on Sampriti flyover that connects Budge Budge and Taratala in the south, from Friday.
The decision has come within days of chief minister Mamata Banerjee expressing her concern over the accidents on the flyover in west Kolkata.
Kolkata Metropolitan Development Authority (KMDA), which maintains the flyover that was inaugurated in 2019, came up with a notice on Friday banning plying of all heavy goods vehicles with immediate effect.
Movement of heavy vehicles has been banned on most of the flyovers across Kolkata whose condition is being checked by a state-government appointed committee of bridge and flyover experts. With Sampriti flyover, officials said the immediate trigger for ban was the recent spate of accidents.
On December 24, a family of three died in a road accident when a tourist bus collided with two motorcycles on the flyover. In September, a motorcyclist had allegedly lost control of his vehicle and hit a guard wall of Sampriti, catapulting across the barrier. Sudip Mondal fell 40ft from the flyover and was killed in the impact.
Trinamul MLA from Maheshtala Dulal Das had recently raised the issue of accidents on Sampriti flyover with chief minister Mamata Banerjee during the recently concluded administrative meeting at Sagar Islands.
With the ban, heavy goods vehicles will now be directed down Budge Budge Trunk Road.
Senior police officials said this could result in congestion since the Budge Budge Road was not wide enough to accommodate heavy traffic.
