An elderly woman, who lives alone in an apartment in the Charu Market area, was allegedly attacked by her son’s driver who entered the house asking for a glass of water and then tried to kill her with the apparent intention of robbing her on Saturday evening, police said.
Mita Saha, 70, who lives on the third floor of a three-storey building on KP Roy Lane in the Charu Market area, was robbed of her jewellery by the man who was later arrested.
The police said Saha lives on the third floor while her son and his family live on the second floor of the same building that has a common entrance.
“According to the statement of Saha’s daughter-in-law, their driver, Sheikh Bablu, had failed to turn up on time prompting her to hire another driver and leave home for some work. Sometime after she left home, Bablu went to their home and apparently started interacting with her daughter on the second floor,” said an officer.
When the daughter-in-law came to know Bablu had entered the house and was talking to her eight-year-old daughter, she instructed their maid to lock the door, police said.
After that Bablu apparently went to the upper floor and started talking to Saha.
“I saw him at the stairs and asked him who he was. He said he was my son’s driver and was thirsty. He took this excuse to enter the house and then attacked me. He ripped off one of my earlobes to pull out an earring I was wearing and also snatched out other valuables I was wearing,” Saha said.
The cops said when Saha started shouting, the man tried to strangulate her.
“A neighbour heard her screams and came to her rescue but found the door locked. She alerted others after she heard a male voice coming from inside. The man fled from the house saying he had gone inside the house to help the elderly woman who had fallen down,” said the officer.
The cops later tracked down the man at his Bansdroni house.
Sheikh Bablu was arrested. He has been charged with sections of attempt to murder and theft.
