OLD MUGS: Every coffee mug has a story. Keep the memories alive by turning them into cute little planters that can add a splash of colour to the corners of your home.

WINE BOTTLES: Glass wine bottles, given their height, make for great decorative planters. Paint, scuff or crack it to build a terrarium inside and let it stand in your kitchen or drawing room to add a leafy accent to the decor.

PICKLE/CERAMIC JARS: Not the most traditional choice but great for upcycling them into inexpensive, colourful and quirky planters. Pro tip: You can even wrap some jute strings around them for a more rustic look!

LIQUOR BOTTLES: Wash the bottles out, peel off the labels with the help of warm water and use them to grow low-maintenance money plants at home. Tie knotted rope around the neck to create a hanging planter.

PLASTIC CONTAINERS: Put that horde of plastic takeout containers from those guilty order-ins to good use. These containers are perfect to pot plants in. Heat the tip of a screwdriver and make some drainage holes at the bottom of the container, plonk in some soil and you have a new plant pot! Decorate them any way you want!

MASON JARS: If you want to give your potted plants a vintage touch, buy mason jars and pot your plants in them. The best part is that they’re clear so when the light passes through the jar, it throws a gorgeous glow over your home. Plus, you always know when the roots need watering.
