Rakulpreet Singh walked in easy khadi separates — floral embroidered cape and co-ord set — for Shruti Sancheti at Lakme Fashion Week in partnership with FDCI. The pretty actress told t2 what she loves about walking the ramp and what's sustainable in her life.
What are your first memories of a ramp walk?
I think when I had just started modelling, I auditioned for Lakme or Wills (Lifestyle India Fashion Week) and the first time, I failed the audition, then I got to watch the fashion week... about 12 years back. I loved the energy on the ramp. I think it's beautiful. There's a different sort of adrenaline backstage. Then of course I walked a lot of ramps before I started acting. I enjoy it. I try to be comfortable on the ramp so that I don't have the fear of tripping, but I enjoy the energy.
What makes up your wardrobe?
A lot of whites, jeans, T-shirts. So, basics.
Do you enjoy wearing your breathable fabrics?
On Sundays. I don't know what happens to me on Sundays! I like to wear breathable fabrics, kurtis. If it's a Sunday when I am not working, I just feel like wearing cotton.
What is sustainable in your life at this point?
I think post-Covid, we've all understood the need to be sustainable. I have started making smaller changes. I don't use single-use plastic at home and have tried to cut down on leather use. Leather shoes are a big no-no. As far as bags go, I have cut down by 70 per cent. I love to keep wearing my outfits over and over again.
Among all the co-stars you have worked with, who do you think is most fashionable?
I think Sid (Sidharth Malhotra) styles well. Even Ayushmann (Khurrana) has a good sense of style.
And, who was your screen icon while growing up?
Sridevi. Those chiffon saris. There was Madhuri ma'am (Madhuri Dixit). I also loved Kajol ma'am in Suraj hua maddham. I think saris look the most beautiful.
Are you a summer girl?
I love summers! I think let's all go sustainable this summer. Let's all choose cotton and khadi. It cools the body.

Who are the showstoppers in your life?
My mum. She is quite the trendsetter even now. And, back in the day I remember, when no one was wearing lycra, she went to Macy’s and picked up lycra tops and she cut the sleeves and wore them as sari blouses. Very fashion-forward.
What is your everyday style like?
I am a balloon-fit kind of jeans person with a casual white tee.
What are you wearing a lot this summer?
Something’s that easybreezy. I love whites. So, definitely linen pants or track pants that are breathable, organic fabrics and using lots of moisturiser and drinking lots of water.
What is the tip to stay relevant?
I think my keen interest to learn and not making it contrived but with the sheer enthusiasm of wanting to keep abreast of what is happening. I actually am someone who enjoys being around young people. It’s so enriching and it’s such a revelation... whether it comes from a place of language or even fashion. It is really a learning curve for me.
