‘The idea of Roy started after the collaboration with Mr Khan (Saif Ali Khan). We now design his regular clothes also. Saif Ali Khan wears clothes that are simple and elegant. After posting about that [the collaboration], we received queries about the clothes, and the whole idea came — to start something that is classic, simple, yet affordable,” shared Abhisek with My Kolkata about the inception of the pret line ‘Roy’

‘Roy’ currently focusses on men’s apparel — shirts and kurtas. But the store also has readymade blouses for women. The fashion guru, who also has an popular store called Bohurupi Santiniketan (at 20, 12B, Grahams Land, Tollygunge), plans to launch a women’s line at ‘Roy’ too. ‘You can say it’s a fast-fashion brand, but keeping my aesthetics intact. The fabric, the material, the cuts are classic, but they are also very trendy at the same time,” shared Abhisek about the line
The present collection at ‘Roy’, which comprises sustainable fabric and organic prints, boasts intricate detailing and stitchwork — a skill which Abhisek aces. The soothing colour palette in pastel shades, the embroidery, the traditional motifs as well as the hint of quirk makes ‘Roy’ an oh-so-fetch label
‘There are Bangla shirts too. The kurtas have detailing on the collars. The prints are organic, the fabrics are cotton and muslin,’ said Abhisek. While the current line is the summer-monsoon and festive launch, the fashion pundit is also brewing a winter edit. The ‘sabudana’ detailing, the floral or bird motif make ‘Roy’ an Abhisek Roy exclusive
The shirts are easy-breezy and are perfect for informal or semi-formal occasions. The blouses, vibrant and in sleeveless and short-sleeved options, are quite eye-catching. The fashion designer stressed the intricate work on the outfits, and the aesthetics and touch of classics — something he is known for
The price range at ‘Roy’ is between Rs 1,500 and Rs 5,000. For My Kolkata, Abhisek’s friend Jeet Basu modelled a few top picks, specially picked by the designer. The line that went viral on social media was inaugurated by Tollywood actors Gourab Chatterjee and Anindya Chatterjee. When asked why this duo, Abhisek shared, “There were two types of shoot videos — one for north Kolkata vibes, where Gourab was my first choice — and he is my lucky charm. For the south Kolkata collection, Anindya was just apt. We had a wonderful time shooting,” shared Abhisek
