Baker Philomena Patrao is keeping things traditional with Easter eggs, bunny lollies, coconut macaroons and marzipan. The St Xavier’s Collegiate School teacher bakes mostly during the festive occasions of Easter and Christmas. “Baking is my passion and I do it because it makes me happy to spread joy. Every year, I would bake for my two children and they encourage me,” says the working mom. She keeps things simple by using moulds to create chocolate bunnies and eggs.

The magic makers at Blaquiere’s are turning their talents to churn out not two or three but 21 kinds of Easter eggs. The family-run kitchen in Behala makes solid chocolate eggs in unique flavours.

Raymond Blaquiere said, "My maternal grandparents started making Marzipan Easter eggs stuffed with sweets and homemade chocolates well over 50 years ago in their Sandal Street home. With time, all moved abroad and it was my grandmother and us who continued the festive business. With rising prices of the material and our unwillingness to compromise on either quality or quantity, we decided to shelve the much-loved Marzipan Easter eggs. My wife Deepika and I ventured into solid chocolate Easter eggs to continue the legacy. We did not want to make the usual basic flavours that are available, so we introduced a variety." Think white chocolate with rose petals, chocolate with chilli flakes and lemon zest or white chocolate and black currants.

Top picks:

  • Arabian Nights (Milk chocolate with dates and almonds)
  • Pirates Bounty (Dark chocolate with raisins and rum)
  • Chocolate Triology (layered dark, milk and white chocolate)
